Lifetime and replacements

Energy per unit rises as the component wears and resets at each replacement.

Multiplies the PNNL cycle life (5,000 cycles at 80 % depth) and calendar life (15 years) of the battery modules. 1 keeps the sourced values.

Not passed to project mode

LCOS: module replacements is left out of project results: project mode only replaces the whole asset at the end of its lifetime. Add it by hand until it does.

capacity factor: 100.0 %

Hours a year the plant is available to cycle. Cycles = service hours / duration of one cycle (charge + discharge + two rests, PNNL Eq. 2), capped at 365 equivalent full cycles a year. At 8,760 h this is the PNNL duty: 456 cycles at 80 % depth up to 10 h.

Hours of discharge at rated power; rated power = energy / duration. Efficiency rises with duration (Eos: 81 % DC at 4 h to 88 % at 10 h) and the cost per kWh falls slightly. Above 10 h nothing is published: the 10 h values are held and the flag shows 1.

Average price of the electricity bought to charge. Default 25.36 EUR/MWh: PNNL's 0.03 USD/kWh at the ECB 2021 rate. Divided by the AC round-trip efficiency in the LCOS.

Real, pre-tax rate of the capital recovery factor and of the module replacements. Default 6.52 %, PNNL-33283 Table 6.1. Real, because all costs are in constant 2021 money.

Years over which the CAPEX is recovered and battery modules are replaced. 20 years is PNNL; 25 years is the Eos expected life.

About

Calculator context

Grid-connected long-duration battery plant built from aqueous zinc hybrid cathode modules of the Eos Znyth type (Eos Indensity Core, 133.34 kWh per unit), with power conversion and transformer. You set the nameplate energy (0.1 to 200 MWh), the discharge duration (4 to 12 h), the hours a year the plant is available to cycle and the reference case. The method is the PNNL-33283 levelised cost of storage (DOE Energy Storage Grand Challenge, 2022, §6, Eq. 1-3), simplified to a real pre-tax capital recovery factor instead of PNNL's fixed charge rate with US taxes.

Efficiency: the Eos datasheet prints a maximum DC round-trip efficiency of 81 % at 4 h rising to 88 % at 10 h, lower than lithium; four inverter and transformer passes at 98 % each (PNNL §4.4.4.4) bring it to AC. At 4 h this gives 74.7 % AC, against 75 % in PNNL Table 4.25 from an independent source. Duty: cycles follow PNNL Eq. 2 with the zinc rest times of Table 6.3, capped at 365 equivalent full cycles a year at 80 % depth of discharge. Degradation: battery modules reach end of life at 80 % of rated energy with a linear decline (PNNL §6.1.5, §4.4.4.2), so the plant delivers on average 90 % of its new usable energy; modules last the shorter of 5,000 cycles and 15 years and are bought again at the PNNL storage-block cost. CAPEX: PNNL total installed cost of zinc nonflow systems, 375 USD/kWh at 10 MW and 8 h in 2021 (398 to 370 from 4 to 10 h), converted at the ECB 2021 average of 1.18274 USD/EUR, with a size law between 1 and 10 MW derived from PNNL's 445 USD/kWh at 1 MW. The fixed O&M is PNNL's 0.5 USD/kW-year; PNNL's power-equipment overhaul is not modelled.

At 80 MWh, 8 h (10 MW), 8,760 service hours, 6.52 % real and 20 years, the plant costs 317 EUR/kWh (25.4 MEUR), runs 456 cycles a year, discharges 26,280 MWh a year at 79.3 % AC efficiency and gives an LCOS of about 140 EUR/MWh, of which about 20 EUR/MWh is the one module replacement in year 11. PNNL prints 0.20-0.40 USD/kWh for all batteries of 1-10 MW up to 10 h in 2021, i.e. 169-338 EUR/MWh in 2021 EUR: the result sits below that band because the pre-tax CRF leaves out taxes, depreciation and the construction period. The PNNL report text mentions 500 cycles for zinc-bromine nonflow on p.56 while its Table 4.26 prints 5,000; the table is used.

Sourced domain: PNNL costs zinc only at 1 and 10 MW and 4 to 10 h. A single Indensity Core (25 kW), any plant above 10 MW and any duration above 10 h are extrapolations: the calculator holds the nearest sourced value and shows the out-of-sourced-domain flag. No revenue, tax or subsidy: those belong to project mode.

  • Low end of the PNNL 2021 battery LCOS band, in 2021 EUR. PNNL uses a fixed charge rate with US taxes and MACRS; this calculator uses a pre-tax real CRF, which lands lower.

  • Power of one Indensity Core at 4 h: a single unit is a 0.025 MW system, below the 1 MW PNNL range, so it is costed with the 1 MW figure and flagged.

  • Maker's expected system life; the reason the economic-life slider goes to 25 years. The model keeps PNNL's 15-year calendar life for the battery modules.

  • Default real discount rate of the CRF. Real, because every cost is in constant 2021 money with no escalation.

  • Default horizon of the CRF and of the module-replacement schedule; also the asset life exported to project mode.

  • Method: PNNL-33283 §6 Eq. 1-3, simplified. LCOS = (CRF x (CAPEX + present value of battery-module replacements) + fixed O&M) / energy discharged + charging price / AC round-trip efficiency. Cycles from PNNL Eq. 2 with the zinc rest times; energy discharged from Eq. 3 with the average usable energy of a linearly fading module. CRF real and pre-tax, not PNNL's fixed charge rate with US taxes and MACRS.

  • Chemistry: zinc-bromine nonflow, i.e. the Eos Znyth zinc hybrid cathode in PNNL-33283 (source Richey 2021 in the report). Aqueous, non-flammable electrolyte with no circulating electrolyte (PNNL §4.4.1.4); no thermal runaway is modelled or costed. Zinc-air is not covered by these numbers.

  • Real terms: all costs in constant 2021 EUR (PNNL 2021 USD at the ECB 2021 rate), no escalation, annualised at a real rate. The fixed O&M exported to project mode is an undiscounted yearly cash cost that does not depend on the discount rate.

  • Sourced domain: PNNL zinc costs exist only at 1 and 10 MW and 4-10 h. Outside it (a single Indensity Core of 25 kW, any plant above 10 MW, any duration above 10 h) no trend is extrapolated: the specific CAPEX stays at its 1 MW or 10 MW value, efficiency and rest time stay at their 10 h value, and the out-of-sourced-domain flag shows 1.

  • Battery-module replacements: the DC storage block is bought again at each multiple of its life that falls strictly inside the economic life, at the PNNL storage-block cost, discounted at the real rate. They are capital, kept out of the O&M exported to project mode; project mode only replaces the whole asset, so the page shows this share separately (BUG-128).

  • Customized CAPEX replaces the model value at every size, with no size law. The battery-module replacement cost stays at the PNNL storage-block figure of the selected case.

  • Convergence: PNNL prints a 2021 LCOS of about 0.20-0.40 USD/kWh for all batteries 1-10 MW up to 10 h, i.e. 169-338 EUR/MWh in 2021 EUR. The model nominal (80 MWh, 8 h) sits below that band because the pre-tax real CRF leaves out PNNL's taxes, MACRS and construction period. The gap is stated, not hidden. The efficiency chain is checked against PNNL Table 4.25 (75 % AC-AC at 4 h), an independent source.

  • Standalone asset sheet: no revenue, tax, subsidy or degradation of efficiency is modelled; those, and the price spread the plant earns, belong to project mode.
