capacity factor: 85.6 %

Equivalent full-load hours a year. Default 7500 h (SynCraft economics, IEA Task 33 2022). Measured: 7537 h on 20-50 kWel plants (C.A.R.M.E.N. 2022), 8333 h at Ternitz in 2021. 4000 h is the Austrian subsidy minimum.

Price per tonne of wood at the delivered moisture set below. Default 108 EUR/t at 35 % moisture (TFZ Bayern, July 2026); TFZ gives 159 EUR/t at 20 %. Change both inputs together.

Water content (wet basis) of the purchased wood. Sets the tonnage bought and the drying need: fixed-bed gasifiers take at most 15 % (C.A.R.M.E.N. 2022), so wetter wood is dried with the plant's unsold heat.

Price of the heat sold, credited against the cost of electricity. Default 40 EUR/MWh (SynCraft 2022); enpro gives 45 EUR/MWh as a guide value. The slider stops at 50 EUR/MWh: above that, with a heat-led unit such as the Hargassner case, heat revenue can exceed every cost and the LCOE turns negative, a sign the plant is a heat plant rather than a power plant.

Share of the produced heat that finds a paying customer. Default 80 %, the Austrian subsidy threshold (UFI 2024). The rest covers drying and losses.

Sale price of the biochar co-product (SynCraft case only). Default 200 EUR/t for soil use (Huber 2017, 2022). Huber 2017 also quotes 1000 EUR/t for premium or BBQ charcoal, a small-volume market left out of the slider, which stops at 600 EUR/t.

Real discount rate of the capital recovery factor. Default 10 %, the IRENA 2012 assumption.

Economic lifetime of the plant. IRENA 2012 assumes 20 to 25 years for biomass plants.

About

Calculator context

Small combined heat and power plant that gasifies dried wood chips or pellets in a fixed-bed gasifier (downdraft or floating fixed bed), cleans the wood gas and burns it in a gas engine. Sized by its fuel thermal input, 80 to 5000 kW on the dry-wood LHV basis vendors print, the range that holds every product on the market (Hargassner KWK 60/20 at 85 kW, Froling CHP at 170-198 kW, SynCraft Typ 500 at 1808 kW and Typ 1000 at 3527 kW). It gives the levelised cost of electricity with heat and biochar credits in EUR per MWh of net electricity, the net electricity, the heat sold, the overall efficiency, the wood bought in tonnes a year at the delivered moisture, the biochar, and the heat needed to dry wet chips.

Method. The IRENA (2012) credit method for CHP, which is also the cost stack SynCraft presented at IEA Bioenergy Task 33 in 2022: annualised investment, fixed O&M, engine maintenance and wood, minus heat sold times its price and biochar times its price, all divided by the net electricity. The investment is 6000 EUR per kW of gross electric power, all-in (enpro; Swedish Energy Agency 2011), held constant with size: six sourced plants from 20 kWe to 1.6 MWe show no economy of scale (5000 to 8750 EUR/kWe, the scatter following scope rather than size), and SynCraft builds larger plants by adding identical modules. Upkeep is 3 % of investment a year plus a full-service engine contract of 9 EUR per engine hour (enpro). Operating labour (0.9 h per MWh of electricity, C.A.R.M.E.N.) is not costed.

Reference cases. The SynCraft Typ 500 datasheet (27.7 % electrical and 54.8 % thermal, derived from printed outputs, 10 % biochar yield), the Hargassner KWK 60/20 prospectus (23.5 % and 71.8 %) and the annual efficiencies measured on 20-50 kWel plants (25 % and 53 %, C.A.R.M.E.N. 2022). Own consumption is 8 % of gross electricity (one plant, Greiler 2016). At the defaults (1808 kW, 7500 h, 10 %, 20 years, wood at 108 EUR/t and 35 % moisture, 80 % of the heat sold at 40 EUR/MWh, biochar at 200 EUR/t) the plant exports about 3456 MWh of electricity and sells 5945 MWh of heat a year from about 4172 t of wood, for about 3.0 MEUR, with an overall efficiency of 80.3 % and an LCOE of about 202 EUR/MWh: 286.6 before credits, minus 68.8 for heat and 15.7 for biochar.

Limits. The LCOE does not move with size, because the specific cost is constant. It moves with full-load hours (314 at 4000 h, 187 at 8500 h), heat price (271 with heat unpaid), wood price and the discount rate. SynCraft's own figure is 100 EUR/MWh, with wood at 90 EUR/t, cheaper financing and O&M of 3 ct/kWh against 5.4 here. Costs are taken from 2011-2026 sources without escalation. The energy left in the biochar is not counted in the overall efficiency.

  • Exponent 1: no economy of scale is applied. The sourced plants show no economy of scale between 20 kWe and 1.6 MWe (5000 EUR/kWe at both 20 kWe and 1.6 MWe, 6000-8750 in between); the scatter is a matter of scope (infrastructure, dryer, building) rather than size. Larger SynCraft plants are built by numbering-up identical CW1800 gasifier-engine modules (Shingu: 4 x CW1800-400), so cost scales linearly with module count. Below 20 kWe (fuel input under ~80 kW) and above 1.6 MWe (fuel input over ~5.5 MW) no source exists.

Market range Specific cost 5000-8750 EUR/kWe with no trend in size.

  • LCOE with credits, IRENA 2012 method: yearly cost (annualised CAPEX + fixed O&M + engine maintenance + fuel) minus the heat sold times the heat price minus the biochar times its price, divided by the net electricity. Same decomposition as Huber/SynCraft 2022 (investment + financing + O&M + fuel - heat yield - biochar yield = power cost).

  • The size slider runs from 80 to 5000 kW of fuel. Cost sources cover 20 kWe (about 80 kW of fuel) to 1.6 MWe (about 5.8 MW of fuel at 27.7 %): below 80 kW no cost source exists, and the specific cost is held constant across the range, not extrapolated from a trend.

    Cost source coverage
  • Operating labour is NOT included. C.A.R.M.E.N. 2022 reports 0.9 h of work per MWh of electricity on 20-50 kWel plants, but no labour rate is sourced here, so no cost is put on it; add it in project mode if staff are paid.

  • Costs come from sources dated 2011 to 2026 and are used as published, without escalation, in constant euros; the discount rate is therefore read as a real rate. IRENA figures in USD 2010 are shown for context only and are not converted or compared numerically.

    Cost basis
  • The plausibility band of the LCOE, 80 to 400 EUR/MWh, covers the reference case and every single-lever sweep from it. Pushing all sliders to their favourable ends together (8500 h, 3 % rate, cheap dry wood, all heat sold at 50 EUR/MWh, biochar at 600 EUR/t) gives about 19 EUR/MWh; pushing them all to their unfavourable ends (4000 h, 12 %, 160 EUR/t, half the heat sold at no value) gives about 545 EUR/MWh. Both are arithmetic corners of the slider box, not observed plants.

    Market range Not applicable.

    —
    Corner evaluation of this calculator
  • The heat credit allocation strongly moves the LCOE (IRENA 2012), so both the heat price and the share of heat sold are inputs. The unsold heat covers the drying of wet chips; the calculator shows the thermodynamic floor of that drying need and any shortfall.

    Market range Not applicable.

    IRENA 2012
  • Biochar is credited only in the SynCraft case, whose staged floating fixed-bed gasifier is designed to discharge char. The Hargassner prospectus and the C.A.R.M.E.N. evaluation print no char output, so none is credited there. The energy left in the char is not counted in the overall efficiency.
